The 3 Ps of a Great Baby Photographer
At Shots by Stuti, we’ve spent years capturing tiny toes, gummy grins, and once-in-a-lifetime milestones. But behind every dreamy frame is more than just a good camera or perfect lighting — it’s a mindset. A way of working. A discipline built on what we call the 3 Ps: Practice, Patience, and Persistence. And there’s one more that makes all the difference — read till the end to know this!
We believe that capturing those precious baby moments is both an art and a science. Whether you’re a new parent eager to preserve your baby’s milestones or a budding photographer stepping into the world of newborn photography, understanding the 3 Ps is essential.
Here’s a little peek behind the lens:
1. Practice
Baby photography, like any art form, only gets better with practice. From understanding how natural light falls on delicate baby skin to mastering the art of safe posing, every shoot is a classroom.
Parents, think of it as finding the perfect angle that highlights your baby’s unique features. For photographers, it’s about mastering different lighting techniques, from the softness of natural light to the precision of studio strobes. The more you practice, the more confident and creative you become.
For both new parents and aspiring photographers, practice is the foundation. Practice also means perfecting hands-on skills, like swaddling and soothing babies, often using dolls, so that when the real moment comes, you’re fully prepared.
At Shots by Stuti, we rehearse setups, explore new techniques, and stay constantly updated with the best (and safest!) practices in baby photography. Because when your little one is in front of our lens, we don’t leave a single thing to chance. As someone who has been upskilling for the past seven years, I’ve attended workshops with renowned photographers like Ana Brandt and Kelly Brown to stay updated with the latest techniques.

2. Patience
Babies can be unpredictable. Some days, newborns nap peacefully through an entire shoot. Other days, they need feeding, cuddles, or just a break from all the action. And that’s okay. We’ve learned to never rush. A yawn, a stretch, a sleepy smile — magic happens when you wait for it. And our job is to create a space where babies (and parents!) feel calm, safe, and unhurried.
Patience is a virtue, especially in baby photography. Parents, this might mean waiting for that perfect yawn or smile. For photographers, it means creating a calm environment, not just for newborns, but also for toddlers and their families. Grandparents joining the session? That’s even more reason to slow down and cherish the moment.
I remember a recent home shoot where the baby was wide awake when I arrived. In newborn photography, a sleeping baby allows for those adorable, carefully posed shots. Even though it meant waiting an extra hour, I made sure the baby was comfortable, well-fed, and peacefully asleep before we started. This patience ensured we got the perfect shots without rushing the process.

3. Persistence
Not every shoot goes as planned. A prop might fall flat. A child might refuse to sit in the set-up. The lighting might change suddenly. But great photographers don’t give up — they adapt.
We come in with a plan… and a plan B, C, and D. Because we know the perfect shot might take one more try, a little more time, or a tiny shift in angle. But it’s always worth it.
Persistence is what turns a good photo into a great one. For parents, it’s about being ready for those unexpected, magical moments. For photographers, it’s about pushing through challenges, adapting to each child’s unique personality, and understanding that not every session goes as planned. And that’s okay!
Persistence is what keeps you going through the ups and downs. Over the years, I’ve noticed that some months, like November to January, are bustling with shoots, while others, like February, can be quieter. I use these slower months to revisit my craft, upskill, and prepare for the busy season, making sure I’m always at my best.

Bonus P: Presence
Presence is that special ingredient that turns a good session into a magical one. This one isn’t taught. It’s felt. It’s the quiet smile exchanged with a new mom. The gentle whisper that calms a fussy baby. The instinct to click just before the giggle.
Presence is what turns a photo into a memory. Presence is the secret ingredient. Being fully present allows parents to enjoy the session without stress and helps photographers capture genuine, heartfelt moments. It’s what transforms a simple photo into a cherished memory.
To truly capture a baby’s essence, you need to be fully present. Not distracted by gear or time or the perfect Pinterest pose. Just there — connected, observing, responding to what’s unfolding.
I recall a twin cake smash shoot with one year old boys. During the session, one of the cakes got damaged. Thanks to experience, I quickly adapted by using the same cake for both boys, simply changing the name on top. Being present in the moment allowed me to think on my feet and ensure that the session was a success.

Whether you’re a parent looking to preserve your baby’s earliest moments or a budding photographer drawn to this magical genre, remember: Practice. Patience. Persistence. Presence.
That’s the Shots by Stuti promise — and the secret behind every timeless frame we create.
